1. The school-consent model
Student accounts on EdulabsAI are created and managed by teachers and schools, not by children directly. Schools act as the decision-maker for their students. Under COPPA’s school-consent framework, the school may provide consent for the collection of students’ personal information for educational use on the school’s behalf.
2. FERPA
We treat student records (such as quiz and worksheet scores) as education records. We act as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest, use these records only to provide the service, and do not re-disclose them except as directed by the school or as required by law.
3. COPPA
We collect the minimum data needed to run classroom features: a student name and a school-assigned username (no student email is required), plus educational activity such as scores, practice records and private classroom-support responses. Learning Reset and Quiet Signal choices are shown to the teacher only as combined class totals. We do not use student data for advertising or build behavioural profiles, and we never sell it.
In the limited Snap-and-Mark beta, a teacher may request processing of one private paper answer-sheet page. The generated page uses an opaque random code rather than a student name; the teacher selects and confirms which student and page belong together. Anthropic receives the de-identified page image or PDF plus answer-region aliases and capture types, but no roster identity or answer key. The model only transcribes and suggests. A teacher must review, correct or confirm every value and score before anything is saved as an assessment. The beta does not promise perfect handwriting recognition and does not automatically grade essays.
Family Digest is a feature-flagged, email-only beta. A teacher, not the child, enters a guardian display name and email address and links the contact to a current class roster. We send an invitation first; learning information is not sent until the guardian completes the double opt-in. Each later digest is editable and must be approved by the teacher before Resend delivers it. The guardian can unsubscribe from the private link in each digest, and the teacher can stop future messages.
To draft a digest, Anthropic receives de-identified verified skill descriptions and official standard codes, not the learner or guardian name, email address, raw answers, scores, rankings, diagnoses or confidence values. The learner display name is added on our server after generation. Under the commercial API default, Anthropic does not use submitted inputs and outputs for provider model training unless the customer explicitly opts in or submits qualifying feedback.
4. GDPR protections for children
Where GDPR applies, the school is the data controller and EdulabsAI is a processor acting on its documented instructions under our Data Processing Agreement. Processing of children’s data is limited to what is necessary to deliver the educational service.
5. What we don’t do
- No behavioural advertising to students.
- No sale of student data.
- No EdulabsAI model-training programme using student data; Anthropic’s commercial API applies its disclosed no-training default to submitted content.
- No requirement for students to provide more data than a name and username.
- No AI transcription or suggested score becomes a student grade without teacher approval.
- No Family Digest is sent without guardian opt-in and teacher approval.
- No Family Digest home-practice answer, grade, progress or mastery write to a school record.
6. Parental & school rights
Parents may exercise rights over their child’s data through the school. Schools can request access, correction, export, or deletion of student records at any time by contacting us.
A guardian can decline the Family Digest invitation or unsubscribe later. Withdrawal stops future email but may leave limited consent, withdrawal, suppression or delivery evidence where the school or law requires an audit record. Family Digest remains a feature-flagged beta pending counsel review; the final retention schedule for guardian contact details and digest records will be agreed before broad release. Optional five-question home-practice links expire within 14 days and provide feedback without changing the child’s school record.
Raw Snap-and-Mark originals stay private and may be deleted earlier than their deadline. Review-ready originals are retained for no more than 30 days, and approved originals for no more than seven days after approval. Permanent student erasure removes access to the raw upload and advances its deletion deadline; any approved assessment then follows the same school-directed retention or anonymisation process as other worksheet records.
